Chapel 11-2

We talked today about how many times the Bible talks about truth (over 200). We talked last week about how Jesus claimed to be truth (see Jn. 14:6). But did you know that of the 200 mentions of truth in Scripture, over 70 instances are from the mouth of Jesus in the Gospels. Over 30 are in Matthew alone. Let’s look a few up:

Read Matthew 5:18, 26, 17:20, 21:21

Discussion Questions
1) What other sources of right and wrong could someone be influenced by?
2) Which ones are most common today?
3) How much do you think Jesus influences your life compared to these other influencers?
4) How often do you simply do what is right “in your own eyes”?

In Judges, Israel would find themselves in trouble having lived their own way. When this happened they cried out to God and, without fail, God saved them.

  1. Every one has their own influence, a mentor or a teacher, but that is speaking of a figure...people could be influenced by so many things in the world today like other religions, celebrities, money, friends, family... the list is endless. All of the above so many people, but i think the drive to be "perfect" has the most influence on people, everyone tries to be something. I would hope it would be obvious to see that Jesus influences my life more than anything. I do what is right "in my own eyes" much too often.

  2. Done, I read Romans 13; in verses 1-6, it talks about how we should pay our taxes and stuff to the government because if God didn't want us to, then why'd he put them there? So we shouldn't complain who got elected (its election day today), because God put them there for a REASON.

  3. 1. well we all have different things and people were influenced by, sometimes its good things like there walk with God and how they show it, but sometimes its bad like there attitude or there dressing, celebs, friends,tv ... anything, we think its cool so we do it ourselves.
    2. the ones that are most common today i think are the bad ones trying to be somthing your not or like lauren said trying to be perfect... even though its not possible. we try to be better then others, cooler then others.
    3. its hard to show it... i think im a person that wants to keep things with me and God and not open up which is not a good thing and i know what i have to do to change it i just dont do it! :(... unless somebody askes me to help them. i think i should be more focussed on him then on the other influences to change everything, so in that way i can help others and probably myself in some situations.
    4. not often... theres so much i can do to change so many things and people, and if i did i think alot of things would be SOOO much different in my life. knowing that im either scared to do it (to change my life) or just dont want to do it, because i think it might get worse. but off course there is the small things that you i do... im sorry but its hard when you dont have everything in your life together.

  5. 1. People can be influenced by so many things like, money, other people, movies, holly wood stars!!!
    2. The most common today I think would be money, because money is the root of all evil!!!
    3. Like Yuliya said I am a person who likes to keep things in between me and God, I don't really like telling others about things that me and God talk about, unless he wants me to share it with someone!!!
    4. How do you know what is wrong in gods eyes? That is the question because
what's wrong in Gods eyes I might not think it's that bad!!!that is a hard question for any Christian! We all want to seem as pure as god, we try to hide that, we know it's wrong but we don't show it, we try to hide our sin from the world, to show the world how " pure " we are!!!!

  7. I read Matthew 19; it talks about how a man asks Jesus about how he could get eternal life; and Jesus told him that he has to keep the Ten Commandments. And the man said that he kept them all; and then he asked what does still do wrong; then Jesus told him to give everything to the poor and follow Him so that the man could have great treasure in Heaven; but the man refused and left. And in the last verse it says, " But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first." which means that the wealthy who were heading to be the best in the world will be the worst in Heaven. So we have to forget all things we have and go obey the commands of God.

  8. Today i read Philippians. Tonight in Youth Group we watched a video and the guy was saying that many Christians will be going to hell because of what somebody told them was false or because of their sins. He said that we cannot love God and yet love sin. So therefore that we should completely deny ourselves of the world in order to fully follow Christ. I looked into two verses which yet almost opposed each other.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” -Ephesians 2:8,9

“What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?” -James 2:14

Since they are both in the Bible i would have to say that they are both right but where is the line drawn? At which point does faith get you to heaven by itself? How much must you have done in your life in order to get to heaven if works matters also? If works itself was necessary then what point would it be to preach to an unsaved person on their deathbed. They might accept Christ but there whole life has been full of sin. So obviously faith in itself can bring salvation. Is it just to those who know that things need to be changed in their lives that their works must be fruitful. But now that i'm thinking more and more about it in order to keep your faith strong you would need to keep refreshing your mind with the Word of God. If your faith is truly strong then you would automatically then be producing good works.

Luke 6:43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

It seems that every time I hear a really strong or powerful message I feel strongly convicted. I feel like whatever I do couldn't possibly good enough. We will never reach our full goal in life as Christians. We'll never reach a point while we are living that where we have finished. Its a life-long goal. Does that mean I will always feel strongly convicted for things my entire life? We I always feel bad about what I have done or am doing? For whoever reads this if you would like to chat with me more about this hit me up sometime and i'll be glad to discuss this with you. Sorry for the unorganized thoughts.

2 the ones that are most common today are friends, celebraties, and movies

  10. 1. people could be influenced by many different things. they could be influenced by friends, famous people, but sadly they are influenced by more bad than good.we all have an influence from something or someone but sometimes we chose the bad influence over the good one. today in our world it's "cooler" to have the bad influence. we think that since the world has it we need it.
2.the ones that are most common today are probably celebrities and friends. but sometimes we are with the wrong friends or watching the wrong stuff.
    3. i think Jesus influences me about lots of times but sometimes i let other things influence me that maybe shouldn't be influencing me.
    4. i do what i think is right "in my own eyes" all the time. way too often then i should be. i think that since im a Christian and im a good person and i do nice things so whaqtever i do is right. that is totally NOT TRUE!!! lots of times i think im right and im not.

  11. 1.There are many things to be influenced by like friends family but most people are influenced by thing unGodly.
    2. I think the most common influences are by people that are older than you like you look up to them but i think so many people dont look up to God and get lost!
3.Jesus influences me a lot but sometimes i get of track and need to go back to him.
    4. i would probably say most of the time but it is really hard to keep on track and to not start going away from God.

  13. 1) What other sources of right and wrong could someone be influenced by?

We are influenced by our friends and what they do, by our parents, our past, and by the people we look up to, the television and all the shows and celebrities we see. even our enemies at times. The reason this is, is that we don’t want to be the only one standing in the end, we don’t want to feel unaccepted and pushed away. There is just something In our nature that wants to be loved and wants to be accepted and all we need to realized is that no matter how “alone” we are standing in THIS world, we have God who is standing with us and who loves us with everything he has.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 2) Which ones are most common today?

The ones that our most common are our friends and the celebrities. Our friends because we don’t want to lose who we are close to. We don’t wanna to be turned against and just thrown away by the ones we thought that loved us most. The ones who can relate to us and the ones that we can talk to. Celebrities are a big one because we look at them on movies and sometimes in tabloids and we see that they have everything and we think if we have everything that we will be happy, and in the search for happiness we will do whatever it takes sometimes, even if it is wrong. One large meaning of life is to be happy, but people look for it in all the wrong places, like drugs and alcohol and many things to just take away all the stuff to which they think it will make them ultimately “happy” and those things are bad, and in the search for the ultimate goal we get lost and distracted and fall into a bad place if we don’t look and be with God to make us happy

  15. 3) How much do you think Jesus influences your life compared to these other influencers?

I would definitely say that these other things, not so much celebrities, but my friends, they are a big influence in my decisions. Jesus can definitely fall second to these a lot of the time, and its something I continue to work on

    4) How often do you simply do what is right “in your own eyes”?

The majority of the time, because I find ways to justify it, and generally us as humans tend to think we are right, and I do that very often

  18. 1) What other sources of right and wrong could someone be influenced by? People could be influenced by the worlds "values" and rights and wrongs what media and the world says is alright also our friends and peers could influences our rights and wrongs and our family also could influence
    2) Which ones are most common today? the media and our peers have the most influence on us today
    3) How much do you think Jesus influences your life compared to these other influencers? I honestly think Jesus does influence my choices more that the world and my peers but she doesnt 100% have the control I want him to in my life and choices
    4) How often do you simply do what is right “in your own eyes”?
Honestly alot but when i consciencely think about usally my heart for God will take over but im still not satisfied with most of the time

  19. 1)People are influenced by the people they are closest with, such as a friend they do things with, or a family member who does things with them, but in this, the person has to see it as something right or something they know could be right; so anyone can influence others and be influenced by others if they think its right.
2)The things we watch, the things we find in life amusing and "fun", and also friends and the "way to be cool" just gets us to do things that aren't what people see us as; so these things commonly influence us today.
3)If I wasn't a Christian, then no, Jesus does not control any part of my life, but thats only if I wasn't a Christian; gladly, I am, so somewhat Jesus controls a part of my life, I'm not exactly sure how much, but I hope most of it, or even better, the whole thing.
4)To tell the truth, I probably do do see with my own eyes more often, but its something I have get rid of, but in the time I don't is when I'm worshiping Him or somewhat in His presence, so I have to work on holding His sight for doing right.

  21. O yea and I read Romans 13, it talks about how it is always been time for us to start obeying God's commands in verses 11-14, so we have to put everything aside, EVERYTHING but God's commands. Before these verses was 8-10, which talks about the commands we MUST do; but in verse 9b, it says, "and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" So love fulfills God's commands; to obey God's commands, is to love, so just love our "neighbors" as ourselves and we obey God's commands.

  23. I just got done reading Ephesians 1 tonight. In verses 3-10, it talks about what Jesus' crucification accomplished in the world; it accomplished the most impossible achievement ever, dying innocently for the guilty; taking the blame instead of us; erasing our dept, and filling it with him. From these things he made it possible for sin to be forgiven, for God to give us His grace. Well thats what I read for tonight.

  24. Job is one of the men in the Bible that I admired because he lost everything and yet he trusted God and didn't complain to him. I know that if that happened to me I would just complain and ask "Why God, why me"?

  25. i know this is a little late, but i was thinking last night before i went to sleep about chapel on Thursday how we talked about betrayal and i really took your message in. It really did hurt opening up a really deep womb but its true you have to get over it sooner or later because if you don't its going to be their to bug you for the rest of your life and we as Christians have to learn to forgive people because that's what Jesus wants us to do, and we as Christians should be the light of the world and the salt of the earth, we should be role models to those that have not let Jesus into their hearts so that one day they will, and hopefully be saved and go to heaven.
And yes betrayal dose hurt, but as a christian i should forgive those who hurt me because that's what God would want me to do. yes it might take a long time to forget and forgive but we definitely need to try because out of all the people on earth or who have walked on this earth Jesus has faced betrayal also and he forgave us he saved us from sin he loves us and love is all that matters, and love can conquer hate.

  26. I read Joshua 24; in verse 13, it reminded me of the US today: "(God)So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant."

  28. I think that there can be a lot of ways of mentoring. You can have a teacher, or a religious practice for some, maybe a mentor it all depends on who you are as a person. I think one of the most common ones today is peer pressure. There is so much pressure these days on teenagers from their friends to do wrong things that a lot of christain teenagers are falling into traps. For me I try my best to listen to what God says about something, but i am human and make mistakes like everyone else, so i am not perfect but i try to do my best to listen to what Jesus has to say about it. I think i do what is right in my own eye a lot of times, like i said i am human and make mistakes, but it is what you do with those mistakes that count.

  29. Today I read Isaiah 1, now this more like our country but also goes with our hearts; it says in verse 7,"Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers."The strangers and foreigners is like the worldly and sinful things that come to our hearts and can become a habit for non-believers and believers; I'm very concerned in what those "strangers" could be for us Christians and how some of us take it all into our hearts...well thats what I read for tonight.

  32. Ok for tonight! :D (mon) So today i read from Titus. I normally read from the same books everynight, but tonight i decided i would read Titus.. acually i think iv never acually read out of Titus before.. so tonight was my first time.. The verse that stood out to me, was Titus 1:2.. it says " in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time" The part really was "God does not lie" because.. well he doesn't.. to me i think sometimes its hard for us to bealive in what God is saying because we've had so many people lie to us. Its hard to look past all the lies into truth... This world is FULL to the RIM of lies. And sometimes its hard for us to go out and do something for the truth.. Becausefor so long we've been feed with so many lies... So its good to be reminded that God doesn't lie. :D

  35. Matthew 3:13-15

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”

15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
    ____
This is a very strong passage for me that john a holy man that baptizes the people so that they can fulfill all righteousness. And just to think about it John was like i am not even worthy to to carry his sandals just to think bout it i am no one and i also am not worthy to carry Jesus sandals but he died for me he saved me from sin he opened up a door way to heaven and i am so great full for it.And John obedient to the Lord baptized Jesus in the water.
We have an awesome heavenly father that watches over us and cares for us so praise God. :)
